Shocking moment man strangles seagull for over a minute after it steals his doughnut

A horrifying video captures the shocking moment a man strangles a seagull after it pinched his doughnut in front of a group of alarmed tourists.

The man, who is thought to have a 'northern accent', choked the bird while down on the beachfront.

The scene was caught on video by appalled onlookers and shows the man holding the bird upside down by the neck for over a minute before proceeding to hurl the poor creature over the pier wall.

The incident occurred in front of a group of tourists in Torquay, Devon, who watched as he grabbed one of a flock of gulls which swooped down to steal his doughnut that was sitting on the sea wall, reports Manchester Evening News.

The man succeeded in grabbing one by the neck, which he then held on to until it dropped his sweet treat which he then picked up and started munching on again.

Those witnessing the moment then gasped as he then flung the seagull over the sea wall.

The video was filmed by a young woman from Torquay who was eating outside Pier Point with her mother.

She said the incident had already been going on for "quite a while" before she grabbed her phone to film the end of the incident.

"It went on for such a long time.

"Nobody really reacted - everybody was just kind of dumbstruck - so I grabbed my phone and filmed the end of it.

"It looked like he had just bought the doughnuts from the Pier Point Chippy - then he put them up on the seawall to answer his phone and the gulls all descended.

"So he grabbed one by the throat and had it in his hand for over a minute and everyone sitting outside at Pier Point restaurant turned around and looked at him in horror - but he didn't care. He just carried on.

"When people were all staring he just said 'It took my doughnut' in a northern accent as if it was a perfectly normal thing to do. But it was horrible."

Another onlooker said: "It was odd that nobody reacted but it was such a weird thing to see. He didn't seem to care what people thought."

Seagulls are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which means it is against the law to injure or kill them.
